Braley Pond Rally a success, and Roadless Rule comment period extended to Oct. 6

Many thanks to all who came out to the Roadless Area event at Braley Pond yesterday! Those who attended seemed eager to learn more and take action to protect the Roadless Rule.

Speakers talked about the national forest roadless areas in Augusta and Rockingham counties, the importance of retaining large blocks of unfragmented mature forest for its many benefits: clean streams that will support municipal water needs and native trout, outdoor recreation, scenic beauty, and wildlife habitat. These roadless areas are fundamental to our thriving local tourism economy.

We already have more mileage of national forest roads than we have Interstate highways, and there is a huge backlog of national forest road maintenance.

Participants signed a petition, wrote comments on postcards, and made plans to let their family and friends know about the USFS proposal to rescind the Roadless Area rule and strip these roadless areas of the protection they have had for 25 years.

We ended the rally with a hike around Braley Pond.

The deadline for comments on the Roadless Rule has been extended to Oct. 6. Submit comments here:
