Time: 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Where: Choose from two Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail sites west of Staunton. What better way to spend Mother’s Day weekend than to explore the tremendous biodiversity in the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest with your family. Participants will visit one of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail sites listed below. Each Virginia Birding & Wildlife site will have a table with an information display and Master Naturalists available to lead small group hikes every 15 minutes. This event will be held in light rain or shine. No registration necessary. Restrooms available. Covid Safe
Please bring a mask to wear in the table area. No need for masks when families are exploring on their own. |
Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail Sites

- Braley Pond – Meet at Picnic Area, .5-mile hike to top of dam and around beautiful pond surrounded by upland hardwood forests and riparian woodlands. View birds (hardwood breeders, migrants, hawks), wildflowers, salamanders, tadpoles, butterflies, dragonflies, and snakes. Scenic view of surrounding mountains. Trail is narrow with steep banks. - Augusta Springs Wetlands – Meet at Picnic Area, easy .8-mile hike on boardwalk trail that meanders through wetland habitats surrounded by hardwood forest interspersed with pines. Two large ponds are home to nesting and migrant birds, snakes, salamanders, butterflies and more. Location coordinates: N 38.10313. W -79.336261, 2735 Little Calf Pasture Hwy, Augusta Springs, Va.
