Early Wildflower Hike in Ramseys Draft Wilderness - Cancelled due to Coronavirus pandemic
Date: Saturday, April 11, 2020
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Place: Mountain House Picnic Area on Rt. 250 about 4.5 miles west of West Augusta, VA
Join us for a hike (up to 4 miles) in Ramsey’s Draft Wilderness to see early Spring wildflowers. We expect to see about 30 species, depending on the timing. Wildflowers start next to the parking lot, and as we move along the stream valley, new species continually appear. The combination of the steep valley side slopes and a long history of floods makes these valley bottom soils a mecca for wildflowers. The tall trees overhead alone make this a great hike. The trail is level and easy, with 2 or 3 stream crossings.
In case of very high water , we will combine part of this trail with the Shenandoah Mountain Trail, which is close by.
The trip will be led by John Holden, a Virginia Master Naturalist. John has led many hikes and wildflower walks, and this is one of his very favorite areas.
Bring lunch, water, hiking poles (for stream crossings), water shoes, and extra socks.
Questions: Contact John Holden by email or phone: 434-973-9179.
Registration: Required
Limit: 17 people (We will break into two groups when we enter the Wilderness area)
