Historic Reddish Knob Fire Tower
Reddish Knob at 4,397 feet sits on the Virginia/West Virginia border and is the highest point on the 72-mile long Shenandoah Mountain. It offers the best vantage point for seeing our proposed Shenandoah Mountain National Scenic Area.
The road to Reddish Knob was built for fire detection and control. The Reddish Knob Fire Tower was removed long ago, but now Reddish Knob provides access to a premier scenic viewpoint that offers 360-degree views of Shenandoah Mountain, the Shenandoah Valley, and the mountains of West Virginia and Highland County, Virginia, Massanutten Mountain, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. It may be the best vantage point in Virginia.
Reddish Knob is accessible by a one-lane paved road with a paved parking lot on top. The road is narrow and has potholes. Reddish Knob road is often iced over in the winter and early spring. Many people go to Reddish Knob to watch the sunrise, sunset, and see the stars. It is a great location for dark skies.
In addition, the road up the mountain to Reddish Knob is lined with wildflowers in spring and summer. At Briery Branch Lake, you may see a bald eagle and other birds. At Briery Branch Gap, you may see crossbills.
