- It crosses prime recreational and biological areas in the the George Washington National Forest, including much of the best remaining wild landscape in Virginia, fragmenting one of the most intact forests in the Eastern United States and opening up a corridor for non-native invasive plants;
- It crosses Shenandoah Mountain over Signal Corps Knob, only a mile south of Confederate Breastworks. This is a popular recreation area features one of the most beautiful segments of the Great Eastern Trail, the historically significant Georgia Camp Trail, and habitat for the Cow Knob Salamander, found no where else on earth;
- It passes through the southeastern portion of our proposed Shenandoah Mountain National Scenic Area and cuts through the Chestnut Knob Grouse Management area on Hankey Mountain;
- It crosses native trout streams including Ramseys Draft, Shaw's Fork and the Calfpasture River;
- It gouges through our national forest near Braley Pond, one of the most beautiful and popular recreation areas in the GWNF;
- It passes very close to the Staunton Dam Tunnel and Staunton municipal water pipe, putting Staunton's drinking water at risk.
