The long-awaited release of the new GW Forest Plan on Nov. 18 brought some very welcome news to Friends of Shenandoah Mountain. The new plan recommends the Shenanoah Mountain National Scenic Area along with an expansion to Ramseys Draft Wilderness and a new 9,500-acre Little River Wilderness for a total of close to 90,000 acres. This is a huge step forward and will help pave the way for Congressional designation.
According to the new plan, The Shenandoah Mountain Recommended National Scenic Area will be managed to protect its natural characteristics, scenic beauty, water quality, fish and wildlife habitat, and recreation opportunities. Current road access will continue as it is now, but no new roads will be built. The area will be off limits to energy development and logging.
The Shenandoah Mountain Proposal was developed in 2004 and has since gained the support of over 220 organizations, businesses and faith groups and thousands of citizens throughout the Commonwealth and beyond. Protection of the Shenandoah Mountain area is also supported by the GWNF Stakeholders group, which includes representatives from timber, game management, hunting , fishing, recreation, and wilderness organizations. Friends of Shenandoah Mountain will continue to build support for evenutal Congressional designation and will also continue to work with the GWNF Stakeholders group to meet a variety of goals for managing the GWNF.
