New Video on  Cattle Grazing on Shenandoah Mountain

4/8/2015

Friends of Shenandoah Mountain Co-Chair Lynn Cameron and local historian Nancy Sorrells have teamed up to make a video on the historic practice of cattle grazing on Shenandoah Mountain.  Nancy talks about how this cultural practice began in the early 1700s and continued to the 1950s.  She discusses how Shenandoah Valley farmers would send their cattle to the mountain to graze during the summer, and in the fall the cattle were rounded up and driven to market - on foot - all the way to Philadelphia.  The video incorporates historic photos of cattle on Shenandoah Mountain from the George Washington National Forest North River Ranger District.
